Life is an adventure. And an adventure is a STORY.
There is no better way to put someone to sleep than to tell a tale without conflict, without difficulty, and without the twists and turns that derail the main character from his or her goal. These are the very elements that make a story interesting, that make it worth telling—that make it GOOD.
The same goes for travel.
When planning an adventure, big or small, do not expect that “everything will go smoothly”. That is not what makes the experience positive. Instead, leave yourself open to the interesting and unplanned pieces of storyline that will inevitably come your way.
Sometimes, the greatest annoyances and most horrendous experiences are the very parts of the story that make it worth telling at the campfire.
A great adventure, like a good story, has moments of frustration and uncertainty. Expect them. Embrace them. Then tackle them.
Make it part of the fun.
Too often, we allow ourselves to believe that a canceled flight, a bit of car trouble, or a bout of bad weather has spoiled an adventure, not realizing it IS the adventure.
If your plans unravel in a foreign land and it feels like the end of the world, change your mindset. After all, what better place to have an adventure than at “the end of the world”?
