1. Challenge yourself to not check a bag.
Everything you need can fit in a carry-on; trust us. A massive wheelie suitcase is cumbersome and annoying on trains, public transit, ferries, cobblestone streets, gravel, stairs… well, you get the idea. It basically sucks everywhere.
2. Get to know the subway, fast.
Cheap. Easy. Safe. And so many colourful maps!
3. You don’t need a travel agent.
Wield the power of the Internet in combination with your own brain. You care more about your trip than a travel agent; the results of your planning will be better.
4. Eat and drink authentic cuisine.
Veer away from the touristy areas to find cheaper (and often better tasting) food. One or two blocks off the main drag will cut your prices in half.
5. Live like a local by choosing a rental.
Renting an Airbnb, Vrbo, Booking, etc. is a great way to find a richer and more immersive experience when finding an accommodation. It also allows you to cook some of your own meals… if that’s your thing.
6. Email copies of your passport (and accommodation bookings) to yourself.
Digital copies of important documents come in handy should your belongings become lost or stolen.
7. Pack a universal plugin adapter that works across all countries.
And while you’re at it, get one that has a couple USB ports.
8. Stay in the “Old City” and walk everywhere you are able.
The old pubs, plazas, and cobblestone streets are the beating heart of most cities. Walk ’em.
9. Use an ATM to get local currency.
Do NOT exchange currency at airports. The rates are terrible.
10. Empty your pack/bag as soon as you get where you’re staying.
Getting air to your clothes keeps them from smelling bad. Unroll your shirts and set them out; you’ll be happy you did, and so will the guy sitting next to you.
11. You are the visitor. Always be respectful of cultural norms.
Travellers are ambassadors and should always act as such.
12. Be present in the moment.
Put your damn phone away. What’s most important is happening around you.
13. Keep it inexpensive.
The most beautiful things to see in this world are free. Put your hikers on and find them.
14. Find a laundromat… or an Airbnb with a washing machine.
Pack less and launder your clothes. The fewer clothing items you take, the smaller and lighter your bag. The lighter your bag, the freer you feel.
15. Leave your comfort zone.
You went to a lot of effort to get to a new country. Now take five more steps to get your ass on the dance floor.
