“There’s two of every person in this world, and one lives in New York,” or so they say. And if that’s true… we wish we could find our doubles and swap our throbbing feet and ankles. I swear, we have walked every street twice.
Ten days of pounding the pavement and this city just keeps giving!
New York is, of course, a place like no other. There are a million cool, hidden gems that can be discovered in every borough. But let’s face it, there are some touristy things you just HAVE to do!
Ok, first things first… take the subway to Yankee Stadium, eat a massive hotdog, drink lots of beer, and watch the Yanks host Cleveland. Check.
Next… walk through Central Park, find that bridge from “Autumn in New York”, and say something romantic. Check.
Then go to a show. Then go to two more shows. Check, check, check.
Find that piano from the movie “BIG” and watch your wife live out her twelve-year-old fantasy. Check.
This could go on and on. But here are a few “musts” that should not be missed if you have time to squeeze them in. In no particular order:
- Check out the view from the top of the Empire State Building or Top of the Rock (we went at sunset and it was incredible).
- Hit a Broadway Show… or two… or three. They’re all worth it, just pick. (We literally booked our flights around our Hamilton tickets.)
- Wander through Central Park; it’s beautiful.
- Cross the Brooklyn Bridge on foot. Then reward yourself by hanging out in DUMBO and having a slice of pizza at Grimaldi’s or a cone at Brooklyn Ice cream.
- Walk the High Line in Chelsea. It’s an old rail line that the city has converted into a park. It’s innovative. It’s artistic. It’s gorgeous.
- Take in some art. The MET and the MOMA make for two enriching afternoons.
- Hop aboard the Staten Island Ferry and take a slow cruise past Lady Liberty. It’s relaxing, it’s iconic, and best of all, it’s super cheap.
- Visit the 9/11 Tribute Museum. It will move you.
From the moment you set foot in this city, the atmosphere seems to carry you away in a kind of magic that’s unlike anywhere else. If you let it, it will sweep you across bridges and boulevards, pull you into creative corners and tasty restaurants, lift you to towering vistas, and wrap you in it’s patchwork of cultural charm. At every turn there is a marvel. It never ends.
Just wear comfortable shoes.
